SAMANTHA ANNE TELLS US ABOUT THE MAKING OF KIRBY

Thanks for having me, MJ! I’m pretty excited about and proud of my new book. In fact, it may not have ever seen the light of day if it weren’t for SYTYCW 2012 and, ultimately, Crimson Romance. Kirby started out as a screenplay that I just didn’t know what to do with – my nerves and inexperience had already doomed it to an eternity at the bottom of my blue bin of WIPs. It remained there until last year, when I found myself in need of a story to enter in my first SYTYCW competition. I was pressed for time (submission week had already begun!), so I pulled Kirby out and wrote a chapter to see if it had legs. Before I knew it, I was in the middle of a feverish novel-writing campaign – I had 58,000+ words to finish in 12 days! And after hours of lost sleep, a few frustrated tears, and very loud chats with myself, I met my deadline. I may not have won the competition, but Crimson saw something special in ‘Kirby’ and signed me in January of 2013. I’m so happy to be able to share my writing with readers the world over! ‘Kirby’ is a fun, flirty read with a little sass, a little steam, a whole lot of Hottie McCoffeehouse; it’s also available at the following links:

*      Google Books www.books.google.com
*      Crimson Romance Store          www.crimsonromance.com
*      iTunes Store www.itunes.apple.com

You can also link to any of these through my website, www.samanthaannebooks.com , where my blog can also be found.

Hope you enjoy Kirby!

Blurb:

Rachel Sirianni is a twenty-seven year old native New Yorker with dreams of becoming an editor for Equinox Publishing, one of the top imprints in the city. And it seems she’s finally gotten her foot in the door, until one wild morning turns her fast track into an uphill climb.

Unable to pay her bills, she takes an unlikely second job to make ends meet and finds herself struggling to maintain two lives – her own, and that of her alter ego. Kirby is a sassy, imaginative, and extroverted fireball whom Rachel had no idea was lying dormant inside of her.

Enter Joe, a larger-than-life, brutally hot writer with a heart of gold. Rachel can’t seem to control herself around him, despite the fact that she’s sworn off men until she can get her career back on track. Their backgrounds and interests very nearly run parallel, and the Universe seems to keep pulling the pair together – in every aspect of Rachel’s life. What happens when two worlds collide, particularly where it concerns Joe? The ride of her life may just lead to love – or it could lead back to the drawing board.

Excerpt:

“Good God, how do you make it to work?"

Rachel’s breath caught in her throat and she realized she was caged in a pair of strong massive arms. Her eyes trailed upward, past a strong chest and a sprinkling of hair. Her gaze extended further and she finally saw his face. Those eyes, the smile that dripped with swagger.

Hottie McCoffeehouse.

His arms locked around her waist, he looked down and smiled. “Really, gorgeous – we have got to stop meeting like this."

Rachel’s breath left her body in a low steady stream. His lopsided grin was covered in a few days growth, and his hair fell forward in unruly black waves over the sides of his face as he towered over her.

Wow, she breathed inwardly, and it occurred to her that the heat of his body would unglue her if she stayed in his arms any longer. Forcing herself to stand, she pulled away from him. She found herself shaking the cobwebs out of her head as she looked at him...again.

“Do you just go to random coffee shops and wait for women to fall into your arms?”

Joe let out a throaty chuckle, deep and masculine. Rachel's body ignited with tiny little sparks, and she fought to hold them down. "Not usually, but if you’re the one that keeps falling, I may have to look into a career change.”

And there was that lopsided grin again. Rachel wanted to groan just looking at him. She figured him to be six feet five, less than 300 pounds. Every single inch of Hottie McCoffeehouse was solid, and her eyes widened as he began to take his blazer off.

“What...what are you doing?"

“Huh,” he replied, oblivious to the fact that she was mentally undressing him, “Oh, you got my blazer with your frappe. I’m just going to get it off..."

Rachel could’ve sworn the heavens had just opened up. Beneath the dark blazer he wore a white V-neck that fit him like a second skin, probably because of his size. With every movement of his well-muscled torso, the shirt threatened to tear at the seams.

Rachel averted her gaze, refusing to absorb any more of the raw sexual energy that seemed to ooze out of him.

“I’m so sorry about that,” Rachel stammered, keeping her head down, “It’s a...it's a nice blazer."

Hottie McCoffeehouse grinned, finally appearing to tune into the way he was affecting Rachel.

“It’s all right,” he replied, placing a hand under her chin and looking her in the eye.

“Listen, that’s twice in less than a month that you’ve ended up in my arms. Don’t you think we should at least have dinner now?"

Rachel’s eyes widened as his touch burned her skin. It was insanely electric; could he feel it too? She stepped backward and away from him, blushing uncontrollably.

“Yeah,” Rachel spoke, slowly, “That’s probably not the best idea...but thank you for the offer, Mister...?"

“Joe,” he smirked, allowing her to pull away, “Just call me Joe. And I’ll tell you what, if this happens again --"

“If what happens again?” Rachel asked, “If I fall?”

Joe chuckled. “If you trip again, and I’m there to catch you, then you have to have dinner with me. Agreed?"

Rachel closed her eyes with a grin, opening them again to meet his gaze. "Fair enough, Joe."

“I have a feeling I’ll be seeing you again,” he closed the gap between them.

Rachel tried to remain composed as he towered over her. "I'm sure you do, Joe."

Joe smiled, seemingly amused by her refusal to react to his advances. He stared at her for a moment, his eyes darkening as a mischievous grin appeared on his face. The tiniest of growls escaped his parted lips, and Rachel's breath caught in her throat. She nearly hit the floor.

Without another word, he turned and walked away. His pants looked fit to burst as his massive legs flexed with each stride.

Every woman in the shop watched him leave, jaws dropped, and Rachel couldn’t help but fan herself after he was gone. She had no idea where on this planet Joe came from, but she couldn’t help but think that he was right – this would not be the last time she saw him.

What a fun excerpt! Here's Samantha's bio. She sounds like one interesting chick!

I’m an NYC-based fiction writer, raised in the part of the Bronx that produced the likes of Jennifer Lopez and renowned choreographer Darrin Henson. I’ve spent years nurturing an eccentric personality, and I’m proud to boast an insane obsession for rock music, love songs, romance and chick lit. I’m also a bassist for a female-fronted punk band called Running Thoughts and a hell of a baker who’d like to one day run her own bakeshop.

I’m a creative person at heart, and when I’m unable to express my creativity I end up withering like a malnourished plant. I strive to live right, love hard, and laugh often. My inner child may be the only child I’ll ever get to indulge and emotionally cuddle, and for now I’m okay with that. I’m intensely proud of the fact that I’ve clawed my way through life, and earned every bit of happiness and success that I’ve achieved so far. My plan is to make it count – all of it.

We'd love it if you'd share your thoughts with us today! Thanks for reading! ( ;

TODAY WE'LL TALK TO NATHAN HARPER ABOUT FINDING JORDIE~AND THEN GET HER REBUTTAL!

What better way to start off your Saturday morning than chatting with the characters from FINDING JORDIE! Please welcome Nathan Harper and Jordan....

We'll start off with Nathan.  So tell  me about yourself. What is your occupation? Why? What are your strengths & weaknesses?

I’m an actor. I get paid to have schizophrenia pretty much. Why am I an actor? Well, according to my wife it’s because I’m “a panty dropper,” meaning girl's drop their panties for me. Ha! My strength is my family and my weakness is Jordie in my T-shirts.

What’s your family like and how does your upbringing affect you now?

My parents are amazing people. They’ve been together for 20 something years…high school sweethearts. That had everything to do with my upbringing. I would see families falling apart all around me and I couldn’t imagine what they felt like because I never had that sort of insecurity when it came to my family.  So, that’s what took so long. I didn’t want to mess around and invest time and emotions into something I knew wouldn’t work out…I was waiting for Jordan to come along. And now, well, as you can see my family has grown and it’s my turn to give our kids that same sense of security.

Very nice. Tell me, if you were told to pick a tangible object that would symbolize you, what would you pick?

It’s kinda crazy that you’d ask this question because I was just discussing it with Frank the other day. He's my body guard. I lose things. I leave shit behind everywhere I go. Anything important, Frank has to hold on to for me. Paper work, schedules, my cell phone, anything I really need.  Hence his fashionable man purse as Jordie calls it. Lol  So right before I was about to shoot a scene, David, (my director) reminded me to take off my wedding band and when I took it off I literally felt anxious about it. That ring symbolizes something so important to me…well, it symbolizes EVERYTHING that I’d ultimately sacrifice my own being for…and it defines me now. I’m not Nathan Harper anymore…I’m Jordie’s husband, Emma and Nathan’s father and last, I’m Nathan Harper. That ring is who I am…it symbolizes everything about me.

That's beautifully said. So how did you two meet anyway? And what was your first impression of Jordie?

Surely you’ve read about this in the tabloids, no? Well, to be quite honest it didn’t happen quite the way they told the story. (Laughing) That still pisses Jordie off til this day.  I had just gotten into New York that afternoon, and my friend Tyler wanted to check out this bar he was going to be playing at. So we headed on over there and the place was jammed packed. I mean wall to wall people, so nobody would have really noticed me. I went outside for a smoke and Jordie caught my eye when she was mouthing off to some drunk guy that was getting kicked out of the bar.  Then she was laughing at something and her smile had me mesmerized. I had never seen anyone so beautiful. When she went to walk back into the bar, the drunk guy she just kicked out came back and they exchanged words. You had to see her. All five foot nothing standing up to this guy. I nonchalantly made my way through the crowd so I was standing a few feet behind her when the guy just hauled off and popped her one right in the face.  Immediately I went to help her up but before I could she was already up and starting to go back at the guy, so I grabbed her around the waist and held her back. You had to see her, mad as hell, and she’s strong when she’s pissed. LOL Anyhow, the papers reported I stepped in and rescued her but the only person I rescued was that drunken fool, because she was out for blood. LOL

Sounds feisty! So, Nathan, what is it that you want out of life?

Everything it has to offer. But more than anything I want to grow old and grumpy with Jordie and to see my kids grow up and lead happy, full lives.

I like that answer! But how about disappointments? Has life handed you any major disappointments?

Life has handed me a few disappointments, yes. I’ve been kind of lucky in the life department. I mean, before I met Jordie, I had my trust issues, and what not. I know poor me right? Lol Honestly though, it sucked. I had no idea who was my friend and who just wanted to use me for fame and money. With the exception of Tyler and my family of course, oh and Frank, I was alone. So yeah, it was sort of disappointing there for a long while…but it was worth the wait that’s for sure.

Now for a fun one. If you had an unexpected free day, what would you do with it?

I’d go house hunting. We need a bigger place now since we’ve expanded. My schedule sucks sometimes so whatever free time I do manage to get, I spend with my wife and kids. Well, Jordan will sleep and I spend time with the kids. It’s that “up all night” stage right now for her with Nate getting up every few hours to eat. By the time she’s done feeding and changing him and falls back to sleep he’s up again.  (laughs) I don’t mean to laugh but she can be quite amusing the morning after a long night.

If you were to leave Jordie out of the equation, who would be your best friend?

Tyler Duncan. He moved to Sacramento when we were kids and been inseparable ever since. Good guy. Calls BS when he sees it and is the brother I never wanted. Heh.

Last question, and then we'll move on to Jordie. What CD is in your CD player right now?

Indie singer Ruston Kelly.

Hmm...I've never heard of him. Now, Jordie. You've been waiting patiently. Tell me about yourself. What is your occupation?

I’m a full time mom and wifey right now but I also own a bar in New York City’s East Village. “The Post.”

Very interesting! Strengths, weaknesses?

My strengths are…Jesus that’s a loaded question huh? I guess they’d be my kids and my husband. They’ve made me stronger…I know it sounds so cliché’ but it’s the truth. And my weaknesses are the same thing probly’ LOL I’d do anything for them…well that and my husband in his faded jeans barefoot with no shirt on. My god that makes me weak in the knees. Yup, definitely my weakness right there. Lol

Okay. What’s your family like and how does your upbringing affect you now?

It’s just me and my sister Kelly left from our family. Our parents died when we were pretty young so that had a lot to do with our upbringing. We learned very early on you had to work your ass off if you wanted to make it in this world. We took care of each other though.

That must have been hard. What is your earliest childhood memory?

I was around four, Kelly, me and our mom were sitting out in the back yard by the lilac tree braiding each other’s hair. … A chilly breeze came through so we decided to head back in the house. Before we got inside though, mom hugged us really tight and said she loved us with her whole heart and then some. I remember her hair smelled like lilacs and honey.

I asked Nathan this one, now I want to get your take. What tangible object would symbolize you?

Right now, my breast pump…Oh shit. Did I say that out loud? HA HA HA… I’d say my wedding ring…it’s everything I want to be and more. It’s everything I’m proud to be, lucky to be and as long as I live, will be.

Describe Nathan for us. What was your first impression of him and did it change over time?

At first I thought Nathan was crazy. LOL No joke, I used to call him nut-job. Our first encounter with one another was me getting nailed in the face by some drunken guy, my face bleeding all over and him having to hold me back like some rabid animal trying to attack the guy that hit me. I figured he had to be nuts if he insisted on walking me home after that shit show.  LOL I knew I would love him though…something inside me just came to life when he was around. I guess you could say it changed over time in the sense that it grew into what we are today. But I still think he’s crazy LOL

Has life handed you any major disappointments?

Oh holy hell…up until I was 22? 23? My life was one continuous stream of disappointments. It wasn’t easy being me…everyone dying on me…young widowed mom…thank god I had Kelley and Rachel.

On to happier thoughts. If you had an unexpected free day, what would you do with it?

Sleep. Then I’d get up and sleep some more.

And last question, what CD is in your CD player right now?

Some indie singer Nathan likes.

Thanks for joining us today, Nathan and Jordie, and I wish you two all the best! We've had a hint of what FINDING JORDIE is about, but here's the blurb to tell you more:

Jordie is a survivor, tough and independent.

She's had to be, since her husband was killed in Iraq. For the last eight years, raising her daughter and owning a popular New York City bar has kept Jordie plenty busy, leaving her no time for much of anything else. Aside from her sassy yet squirrely best friend Rachel, Jordie's social life is bare bones and her love life nonexistent. Truth be told she wouldn't change a thing; she's never been
happier.

Then she meets Nathan, and he changes everything with one crooked smile, triggering a chain of life-altering events for the two of them, filled with romance, chaos, and deadly peril. Neither of them could ever imagine their relationship would resurrect an unknown darkness from Jordie's past, lurking in the shadows, just waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Jordie has never needed to be stronger for all of them to make it out alive.

Sensuality Level: Sensual

The following excerpt contains strong language.

“Fuck!” I blurted out as I reached my steps. Nathan was perched there halfway up and, my Lord, he was
looking fine.

“Is that a statement or a request?” He grinned mischievously at me, a grin that touched those amazing blue eyes.

Oh shit, he’s here … on my front porch. My heart slammed into my throat and I was pretty sure I had lost the ability to form a coherent sentence. “Hi?” was all I could manage to say.

What was he doing here at three A.M.?

“I wanted to make sure you made it home safely,” he said, as if answering my silent question.

“Nut. Job,” I mouthed slowly to him.

He laughed, unveiling that beautiful, perfect, white-toothed smile that made his eyes even brighter. Then it happened. With that one smile, I surrendered to whatever it was inside of me I was fighting. I could no longer worry about how this story would end when all I wanted to do was start it.

I walked past him. “Want to come up for a beer or something?” I unlocked the door and waited for the impact of the rejection.

“Or something.”

I could hear the smirk in his tone. “Is that a statement or a request?” Ugh, what are you doing? Is this flirting? I silently sighed. Rachel had never been more correct — it had been too long.

“Lock the door behind you, please.” I started the two-flight journey to my apartment. We reached my door, and I took a deep breath while I unlocked it. We walked in and I tossed my crap on the table as usual. He closed the door, and I heard the click of the lock. “Want some breakfast?” I asked him, walking past the large sectional in my living room into the kitchen. Nathan followed but stopped in the dining room and took a quick glance around my place as he leaned against the wall.

“Assuming I will be here for breakfast?” he asked in a sultry voice full of humor.

Flushed, I popped my head out from behind the fridge door. “Smart ass, I meant now. I’m starving. Yes or no?”

“Sure.” He got dimples when he smiled.

“Can you make some coffee?” I pointed to the pantry closet door.

“Yes, ma’am.” He stepped into the pantry. “Pop Tarts? You eat Pop Tarts?” His muffled words became clearer as he walked out, holding coffee in one hand and a box of Pop Tarts in the other. He
closed the door with his foot.

“I enjoy a good Pop Tart.” I pouted, crinkling my eyebrows.

“Seriously? Strawberry? I thought you said you enjoyed a good Pop Tart.” He eyed me suspiciously.

“Shut up — it’s the sprinkles. They make me happy.” I quickly looked back down to the pan, trying not to stare at his amazing blue eyes.

“Do you know what these are made of?” He sounded appalled, as if I were eating a cockroach instead of an artificial pastry.

“No, please enlighten me.” I noticed my cheeks hurt because I had been smiling for the past five minutes.

“All right, sassy pants, I will.” He was attempting to be serious, but began to laugh while he poured water into the coffee maker.

“C’mon educate me, I need a good schooling, and have you ever made coffee before?” I playfully grabbed the coffee from his hands, swiftly dumped four scoops into the top of the machine, closed the lid, and pressed the start button.

“Impressive.” He hopped onto the counter holding the box of Pop Tarts again, watching me. “It’s a sugar coma is what it is. I can’t explain it. I just know anything that has a shelf life of fourteen years and is still edible after a nuclear winter can’t be good for you.” He held his head high and tightened his lips as if he was triumphant in convincing me.

I stared blankly at him, trying my damnedest not to laugh, but the corners of my mouth betrayed me as they tightened. We both burst out in laughter.

“Really? That’s all you got?” I snatched the box from his hands and put it back on the counter. “Like I said, it’s all about the sprinkles, so if there is in fact a nuclear winter, at least I’ll be happy.” I tossed him a loaf of bread. “Can you make toast?”

“Can I make toast?” He hopped off the counter. “Of course I can make toast.”

When I turned to look at him he was standing at the toaster with a confused look on his face.

“You’re kidding me, right?” My mouth popped open wide in shock and he laughed.

“Gotcha.” He winked, pushing down the lever.

Oh my, no no no. I won’t survive this night if he keeps shit like that up.

SHHH!! I NEED TO TELL YOU THE SECRETS OF JENKINS BRIDGE! FEATURING AUTHOR DONNA SHIELDS

This is one secret you don't need to keep quiet about. In fact, I'm sure Donna would be glad to hear you shouting from the rooftop about the SECRETS OF JENKINS BRIDGE. Take a look!

About Secrets of Jenkins Bridge

Picture

Hunting down a dangerous mob boss has brought FBI agent Mitchell Donovan home, reawakening an old flame, resurrecting a dead best friend, and discovering fatherhood. As if those aren’t enough, his new case will push everything else aside: finding the kidnappers who took the daughter he never knew he had.

Katherine Delaney never forgot the heartbreak Mitchell had caused with his abrupt departure all those years ago. With her dead ex-husband accused of murder and her daughter kidnapped, she will place her trust in the one man who could trample her heart again if she gets too close. But, will the resurrection of Katherine’s ex-husband and Mitchell’s chase for a killer destroy their second chance at love and happiness?

Excerpt

They followed the paramedic toward the ambulance while Gladys and the other woman continued to talk.

He’d had a nightmare in the early hours before Gladys’ call had awakened him. The Camaro from his dream sat in the same exact spot. Aidan pointed out the car and told Mitchell he had to save ‘her’, whoever that might be. He figured he was about to find out. If, in fact, he wasn’t losing his marbles.

As they rounded the corner to the back of the ambulance, Gladys stopped short causing Mitchell to nearly colliding into her. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” he croaked, and then cleared his raw throat. “What’s the victim’s name?”

The paramedic shook her head, blonde ponytail swishing. “We don’t know. Haven’t found any ID yet, and she’s a little confused. Has a nasty bump to the head.”

He let Gladys climb aboard. Her upward movement stopped in midair, one leg dangling a little too close to Mitchell’s jewels. He jumped back as she whipped around, almost losing her balance. In a barely audible tone, she said, “I know her.”

“You know practically the entire town.” Mitchell gestured toward the victim. “Say something. Who is she?”

Her gaze stared off in the distance above his head. “It’s just so weird. It’s the widow whose husband drove off that bridge.” She pointed toward Jenkins Bridge, the old wooden-covered overpass in the distance.

An icy chill ran up his spine. Gladys moved aside, giving him full view of Katherine Delaney. She may be battered and bloody, but Mitchell could never forget her face, her high cheekbones, or the tiny, turned up nose. Shit.

Their eyes met, and his chest instantly tightened, his throat constricting. Something was wrong. She seemed to stare through him. Surely, she recognized him. He hadn’t changed that much. He managed to find his voice. “Hello.”

Katherine closed her dazzling emerald eyes. “What happened?”

He put his trembling hands behind his back interlocking them. “You were in an accident. What’s your name?”

She shook her head, the confusion apparent..

“It’s all right. This is Detective Freeman and I’m Detective Donovan.” Would the name register?

If it did, she didn’t react. She closed her eyes and turned her head away from them.

The paramedic announced, “Gonna have to finish this at the hospital after the doctor examines her.”

Mitchell reluctantly backed away allowing Gladys to jump down. Once the ambulance left, Mitchell said, “She didn’t recognize me.” Hundreds of miles apart and fifteen years later, and none of that mattered anymore. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and protect her. What was her life like now? Did she still live on the ranch with Aidan’s mother? Or did she have another whole life somewhere else?

Would she be okay? What if something happened to her? He couldn’t think like that. He wouldn’t.

“You know her?”

Of course he had. When he left Addison, he had been running from the hurt they’d caused one another. And his mother’s death. And his own demons.. “You keep forgetting. I grew up in this town.”

“What’s your connection?”

He didn’t want to get into his and Katherine’s complicated past at the moment. “We went to school together. Her husband, Aidan, and I were best friends.”

Gladys’ milk chocolate eyes grew large. “Oh wow. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. That was a long time ago.” Life goes on.

DR. VALERIE FORGARTY TELLS US ABOUT THE MELODY IN OUR HEARTS~A CHARACTER INTERVIEW

Good morning all! And welcome Dr. Fogarty! We're glad to have you join us this morning.
I believe this is the first time I've ever interviewed a surgeon. I'm sure it will be fascinating, so let's get down to business.

First off, tell me about yourself?  What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I’m Irish, was born and grew up in Dublin, where I met the person who changed my life for good, my best friend Ryan. When he moved to Boston to attend Berkley College, I followed him so now I live in Boston, where I work as a doctor, a cardiac surgeon to be precise. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am now, and I can’t say it’s been a bed of roses. It’s been quite tough, and there was a short period of time when I gave up and left surgery, because I lost a patient during an operation and I couldn’t bring myself to step into an operating room ever again. I’d say that has been my weakness. I’d always known that I wouldn’t be able to save everyone, but when you lose a patient, well, it’s tough. And I wasn’t strong enough to get over it.

My strengths? Well, my one source of strength has always been Ryan, my very best friend since I was thirteen. He’s the shoulder I can cry on, the one person I can always depend on; he’s always been there for me and I know he always will.

Sounds like a good guy. So what is your earliest childhood memory?

Spending time with my grandfather, listening to his collection of old records, and listening to the story of how he met his best friend Thomas Wyler, Ryan’s grandfather. He used to tell me that story, and many more, over and over, while we listened to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and drank tea.

Sound like you had a close relationship. Now here's a kind of offbeat question, but I think it's one that is very revealing: If you were to pick a tangible object that symbolized you, what would it be?

Well, I guess that being a surgeon I should say a scalpel, but that’s not it. What symbolizes me is the Celtic ring that hangs from the silver chain around my neck. Ryan has the same ring, only he wears it on his right ring finger, while I can’t, because of my job, you know. We bought it together when we were still in Dublin, and appointed it as the official symbol of our friendship.  He’s never taken it off, all through these years; he’s always said it’s his lucky charm.

Describe Ryan for us. What was your first impression of him? Did it change over time?

When I first met Ryan I was thirteen and he was fifteen. I was a very shy girl, who didn’t fit in at school because I loved old music and my friends used to make fun of me. When I met him in the Music Club my grandfather and his had founded years before, I thought it was cool that I wasn’t the only teenager who liked old music. At first, when he spoke to me, I felt really self-conscious and didn’t know what to say, but then he grinned and something inside me relaxed. After a few minutes, it was as if we’d known each other all of our lives. We simply connected, I don’t know why or how, I guess it was just meant to be. We felt this sort of bond, as if we were siblings who’d been separated at birth and had found each other years later. I obviously thought he was a good-looking boy, with his hazel eyes, and dark hair, with a funny forelock hiding half of his brow that he always had to brush aside because it got into his eyes, but I’ve never really seen Ryan as just a boy, someone I could have a crush on. He’s always been Ryan, my best friend and the brother I never had. He hasn’t changed much over the years, apart from having that forelock cut and getting taller and more masculine, and even more handsome if I may say it; but apart from that, sometimes he’s still the same fifteen-year-old boy I used to hang out with. And I’m glad success hasn’t changed him.

Is there anything about Ryan that you would consider a flaw?

I don’t know if this is a flaw, but Ryan is just too good to be true. I’ve always hated (but in a good way) the confidence he has, and how he always succeeds at everything he does. He’s got this magnetic charm he doesn’t even know he possesses, and once you get to know him, you simply can’t not like him. It’s always been like that, back when we were teenagers and girls drooled over him, without him even noticing, and then again when he became a jazz star and screaming girls threw themselves at him –well, in that case he actually noticed them, but it was impossible not to!

Yeah. I guess so! If you had an unexpected free day, what would you do with it?

As a young surgeon, I don’t get many free days. I have to struggle to earn a reputation in my hospital, so I guess an unexpected free day would be a blessing! Although I guess I’d be so tired I’d probably want to spend it sleeping all day long, I think I’d probably ask Ryan to take me to Disney World. I might be too old for that, but I’m sure Ryan and I would have a whale of a time there. Deep down, we’re still kids, you know?

Absolutely! I could say the same for my husband and I.  Valerie, what CD is in your CD player right now?

Do I need to say it? One of Ryan’s of course! But every now and then I still love listening to Frank Sinatra, our musical hero and the artist who inspired Ryan to pursue a musical career.

Very interesting discussion! Thanks for taking the time to join us Dr. Forgarty, and please come back any time.

THE MELODY IN OUR HEARTS

Doctor Valerie Fogarty studied hard to become a competent surgeon, but losing a patient during an operation made her throw everything out the window and now she can't set foot into an operating room anymore. Until her best friend Ryan is brought into the ER on a stretcher, fighting for his life after a terrible car accident and she’s the only one who can save him. Meeting him as a teenager in their hometown in Ireland was the turning point in her life and she knows she will never be able to live without him. Will her determination and skills be enough to save Ryan's life?

Jazz Star Ryan Wyler grew up in Dublin, with a dream of becoming a professional pianist and continuing the legacy of his musical hero, Frank Sinatra. When opportunity knocks and he's offered the chance to pursue a real music career, he's happy to accept it, unaware that what he's actually accepting is a package deal he will have no control over. But when success keeps him away from Valerie, his best friend since adolescence, Ryan will have to question his choices.

A story about the value of true friendship, the power of dreams, and the unpredictability of love.

Excerpt:

“I know it’ll be hard for you, Val; it’ll be hard for me, too. It feels like we’ve grown up together, even though we’ve only known each other for a few years, and we’ve spent so much time with each other that we think we’ll never make it on our own.” He took her hand again, and she intertwined her fingers with his. It had always come so naturally, and it was something they did often, even when other people made fun of them, saying they were acting like two sweethearts. “Our friendship’s gonna last forever, wherever I’ll be, wherever you’ll be. I promise. Besides, we’ll be together again in two years.”

The street light shone on his face, and she saw that he was smiling. Once again he had understood the way she was feeling without her having to say it out loud. She knew that she would never feel the same with anybody else, and the thought made her even sadder.

“I’ll tell you something,” he said, seeing her hesitation and taking her other hand. “To seal this promise I made and as a sort of eternal friendship pact, I want my first kiss to be with you.”

Valerie stared wide-eyed at him and he shrugged, smiling.

“Don’t let it go to your head, now! If I have to become a heart-breaker while I’m in Boston, I want to make sure I’m good at it!”

Valerie laughed and felt the sadness suddenly disappear.

“Right, so I’m going to be your Guinea pig…” She sighed dramatically. “Oh well, what wouldn’t a girl do for her best friend?”

They both laughed, and he let go of her hands, brushing aside the forelock from his face.

“They say you never forget the first kiss, so I want it to be with you. I want to remember you forever, just the way you are now. When we’re apart, we’ll grow, we’ll change, and maybe, when we meet again, we won’t recognize each other anymore. I want you to know that you’ve been my best friend ever, Valerie, and that I’ll never forget the years we’ve spent together.”

She felt tears welling up in her eyes again, but she tried to fight them back.

“I’ll never forget you either, Ryan.”

He smiled at her, then took her face in his hands and gently brushed her lips in a sweet, fraternal kiss. A kiss neither of them would ever forget.

Author bio:

An avid reader since her childhood years and being an only child, Roberta always enjoyed the company of her fictional friends from the children’s books she loved reading, while she dreamed of writing her own stories one day.

It was when she discovered novels by authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy in her teenage years that she realized it was time she put down in words the stories she had kept well hidden in her mind until then.

What started as a hobby, soon turned into a real passion and a way of life, until she could no longer keep the stories to herself, and decided to get over her fears and share them with the world.

Roberta lives in Italy, but her dream is to move out of her country and live either in a thatched cottage in the Irish countryside or in a country house with a swing on the back porch, somewhere in the United States, where she would love to spend her days writing novels as a full-time job, and maybe one day even get as far as writing a screenplay for a movie.

KICKING OFF AUTHOR AMY LEE BURGESS'S BOOK TOUR TODAY!

Hello folks! Today I am pleased to not only kick off Amy Lee Burgess's Buy the Book Tour for her newest book in her WOLF WITHIN SERIES, but also host her on the day that ABOUT FACE is to be released! Cool title, huh? So without further ado, heeeere's Amy!

Today I’d like to talk about romance.  Liam Murphy and Stanzie Newcastle’s romance in particular. When I set out to write the first novel in the Wolf Within series, Beneath the Skin, I knew it would be a paranormal romance, but I wanted it to be different than other shifter novels I’d read.

Most of them have one guy/one girl and a mating bond that they recognize when they first meet and they can’t fight.  I wanted to try something different and I also wanted my hero and heroine to be in their thirties and thought it would be fun to try my hand at second-chance love.

Both of them lost their first bond mates to accidents.  Stanzie’s bond mates, Grey and Elena, were killed in a car crash on Stanzie’s thirtieth birthday.  She was driving and was left feeling enormously guilty and grief-stricken as you can imagine.  Her pack, Riverglow, was unsupportive and she was brought before a tribunal. Although she was cleared of the charges of driving under the influence and killing her bond mates, Riverglow threw her out anyway and she went to Boston where she spent two years living in exile away from everyone Pack.

Liam Murphy’s bond mate, Sorcha, fell down the stairs at her workplace and died of the injuries.  She was four months pregnant and Liam had to deal with that loss as well. His pack, Mac Tire, supported him, but he left anyway to live in Belfast and grow vegetables in his back garden while he tried to cope with his overwhelming grief.

Now some people say there should be a happily ever after ending to all paranormal romances. I don’t believe that. While I don’t advocate unhappy endings, I’m a firm supporter of the Happily For Now style, especially in a series that follows the same character. You want some dramatic tension, don’t you?  Romance ups and downs provide some great tension and a fantastic opportunity to layer and build the characters.

Here is where I admit I did not set out to write a series. Beneath the Skin was a NaNoWriMo novel – one I was determined to finish in fewer than one hundred thousand words and submit to Lyrical Press for publication.  I’d been writing for years, but my novels to that point were epic tales at least four hundred thousand words long and I knew that was way too big to try to submit to a publishing house.

But once I finished Beneath the Skin and it was thankfully accepted by Lyrical, I realized I could write a series. Stanzie’s voice was fresh in my head and there seemed to be lots of stories to tell, especially since I’d set it up that she and Murphy were Advisors to Councilor Jason Allerton and poised to go on investigations and adventures for the Great Council.

The reason I didn’t give Beneath the Skin a Happily Ever After ending was because I thought that since the novel’s timeline covered barely more than a week, it was far too soon for Stanzie and Murphy to fall in love. Instead, they fell in like and realized how lonely they’d been without their packs and, especially in Stanzie’s case since the series is told from a first person perspective, that maybe she really is ready to not just love again, but live.

I’ve pretty much broken the Happily Ever After Rule in every novel so far.  The third novel, Hidden in Plain Sight, has the least Happily for Now ending of them all and Inside Out, the fourth novel, throws a huge wrench into the works when Murphy breaks up with Stanzie and leaves her to go back to Dublin.  This happens at the beginning of the novel and so two-thirds of the adventure she’s on her own. Sacrilege!

By this point, I think everyone is convinced Murphy loves Stanzie even though he hasn’t said it.  Stanzie has admitted to herself (and thus to the readers) that she loves him, but she hasn’t said it to him either.   They keep missing each other in this regard because of events that are happening in real-time as well as experiences that haunt them from their pasts. Sometimes I just want to take their two heads and smash them together, but since romantic tension is good for plot lines, I’ve so far resisted.

So now we’re up to the fifth book, About Face, the one that I’m on tour with right now.  I’m sweating this one because I know people are waiting to hear Murphy’s explanation for leaving Stanzie.  I’ve gotten email from readers who are incensed with him and tell me he’s got a lot of groveling to do.   Then I’ve got others who are serenely convinced he must have a damn good reason and they trust him.

The romance figures prominently in this novel because this is the make or break novel.  Murphy and Stanzie will both work through their problems and admit their love for each other or…they won’t.  You’ll have to read to find out, but I promise you the ride will be fun, exasperating, poignant, exuberant and all shades in-between.  I warn some of you though, in typical Stanzie/Murphy fashion, they both think they’ve got the upper hand, so I’m not sure how much groveling Murphy is going to do.

I always love to get reader feedback, so please email me at amyleeburgess99@gmail.com and tell me whether you think Murphy’s reason for leaving was good enough and if you are happy with the outcome, whatever it is, between him and Stanzie.

Meanwhile, enjoy the book!

Excerpt

Our fingers were still linked when I opened my eyes hours later. The bedroom smelled of sex--of us--and while he wasn't snoring, Murphy’s breath was slow and heavy, the way I remembered from the nights we’d spent together in America.
For a moment I was filled with such aching happiness I almost expected to levitate off the bed. But then I remembered everything, and black despair bit into me so hard I wondered I didn't bleed.

He’d rolled off me at some point, but we were still on top of the covers. I let go of his hand and slid off the bed. I found his t-shirt and my panties, put them on and fled to the living room.

The remains of our dinner had congealed on our plates on the table. The lights were still on, and I got as far as the sofas before my legs went out from beneath me and I couldn't breathe.

Murphy appeared like a ghost in the bedroom doorway. His eyes were very dark.

“Can we talk about it, Stanzie?”

“What’s to talk about?” I drew one of the throw pillows defensively close to my stomach.

I loved him but he didn't love me. I’d tried so hard not to let that overwhelm me and make peace with it. Of all the people in his life he protected, I was the last on the list and that’s not where I wanted to be. “You chose Paddy and Mac Tire over me, and I guess I get that, but it hurts.”

“I had no idea you loved me.” His tone was raw and desperate. “I thought I was doing the right thing. You didn't need to be put at risk in this, and I thought I could--”

“What? Don’t lie to me, Liam. You didn't want me involved because you’re going to do something stupid to save Paddy and your father. Why should you martyr yourself for them?”

“Paddy came to me for help,” Murphy shouted and the muscles in his face strained as he struggled to regain control. “He had nowhere else to turn, don’t you see? It’s not like I could tell him to go screw himself. He’s my best mate.”

“But it’s okay to tell me to go screw myself, I guess. I’m your bond mate. You wouldn't come to my tribunal. You threw me out like so much garbage when Paddy told you his problems. And you couldn't even tell me why. You’re so hell-bent on saving everybody, but it’s always on your terms and you have to be the one to give help--you never want it in return. I would have helped you. I would have done anything for Paddy--he’s my Alpha--but you decided what was best for me in your typical high-handed Liam Murphy fashion, and to hell with what I thought, what I wanted.

“And then tonight you take advantage of the fact I love you so you can, what? Have sex?

Haven’t you screwed anyone in four months, or have you just screwed people over?”

His face blanched of all color, and he stared at me, his dark eyes bottomless.

“That wasn't just sex. Did that feel like just sex to you?”

“No, not to me. I love you. But that’s what it was to you. Will you please leave me alone? I’m tired and I want to go to sleep.”

“Stanzie, I know you’re tired, but we've got to talk about this.”

“In the morning. Maybe.” I turned away from him because I couldn't stand to look at the entreaty in his eyes. In a heartbeat I’d be across the floor to him, and screw that.

He abruptly gave in. “Look, you take the bed, I’ll sleep out here.”

“No, I’ll stay out here.” I was ten seconds from tears, and I wanted him gone so he wouldn't see.

“Stanzie, take the bed.”

“No,” I shouted, and the damn tears poured down my cheeks. “It smells like us in there, don’t you get it? And us is a lie. Just let me do what I want, goddamn it.”

He opened his mouth to argue, but then, defeated, retreated and did as I asked.

Whoo! Love that excerpt!
